What characteristics place blue-green algae in kingdom Eubacteria?
Under the present system of classification, one group of algae is placed in the kingdom Eubacteria. What characteristics place blue-green algae in this kingdom?
* they lack a membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles
* they lack the histone proteins associated with eukaryotic chromosomes like those of “true algae”
* their cell walls contain peptidoglycan like other eubacteria
* their photosynthesis is different to that of “true-algae” in that they lack chloroplasts. They have an elaborate and highly organized system of internal membranes which function in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll a and several accessory pigments (phycoerythrin and phycocyanin) are embedded in these photosynthetic lamellae, the analogs of the eukaryotic thylakoid membranes.
